Recent Trial History Improves Encoding Models of Brain Responses During Emotional Video Viewing

Trial-wise brain responses during naturalistic viewing may depend not only on features of the current trial but also on recent stimulus history. Here, we investigated whether adding recent-trial information improves region-wise encoding models of trial-wise fMRI responses during emotional video viewing. Focusing primarily on emotion features, we compared current-only models with history-augmented models that incorporated 1-back and 2-back information, while also examining visual feature spaces in parallel. Adding 1-back features improved prediction across much of cortex and many subcortical regions, with the strongest gains observed for emotion features. Visual feature spaces also showed positive 1-back gains, but these were smaller. By contrast, adding 2-back features produced little further improvement beyond the 1-back model. These results show that trial-wise brain responses are not fully captured by current-trial features alone; useful recent-history information is concentrated in the immediately preceding trial, especially for emotion features.
