Multistep representation of social networks in LLMs

The ability to navigate social relationships is critical for adaptive social behavior. However, artificial intelligence systems show striking failures in solving the kinds of social reasoning problems that humans excel at. Although large language models' social behaviors are not human-like, we find preliminary evidence that next-token probability distributions contain information about multistep social relationships, a representational format that enables adaptive social choice in humans.
