Hippocampal representations of temporal context during visual statistical learning

Temporal patterns embedded in sequential stimuli can facilitate the perception and memory of these stimuli after brief exposure. The role of the hippocampus in such a statistical learning (SL) process remains unclear. We investigated this problem with a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dataset acquired from participants performing a visual SL task. We found that temporal context rather than stimulus features shape hippocampal representations in the course of SL. Moreover, faster learning was observed for stimuli with linguistic information compared to those without. Correspondingly, the hippocampal representations separated faster for the linguistic stimuli with embedded temporal structure from those without. These findings suggest an active role of the hippocampus in SL, rather than being a passive storage for learning outcome.
