Noise exists in different stages of early visual processing. We want to understand the role of noise during efficient coding in early visual system. We use VAE to model information processing, applying biological bottlenecks. Under a sparse prior-posterior, we find that noise is beneficial and resulting representations show bioplausible receptive field hierarchy and whitening. This informs our main hypothesis: sparsity of neural code exists to exploit noise.
