Adaptive estimation of individual sensory representations

Sensory representations of the same physical stimuli vary across individuals. We propose a Bayesian adaptive procedure to estimate individual sensory representations using targeted perceptual discrimination judgments. Key to our approach is identifying stimulus distortions for which observers differ most in Fisher-information-predicted sensitivity. As a proof of concept, we simulate observers with cone fundamentals drawn from a population model and demonstrate that our approach can recover them with a feasible number of forced-choice trials. With real observers, this approach could enable efficient, personalized characterization of sensory representations from a modest number of trials.
