Shared and context-dependent cortico–striatal–cerebellar organization of temporal prediction

Temporal prediction refers to the ability to anticipate when events will occur. Yet, it remains unclear whether this cognitive capacity relies on shared or context-dependent mechanisms across temporal regularity, modality, and task demands. Using a multi-task fMRI paradigm, temporal encoding for subsequent prediction engaged cortico–striatal–cerebellar regions as a function of these factors. Premotor and cerebellar regions formed a tightly coupled core cluster, sensory cortices showed modality-specific responses, and dorsal striatum exhibited strong task-dependent modulation and selective sensitivity to auditory beat-based timing. Although weaker, the cerebellum showed also a task effect but no beat-specific effects. These findings support a shared representation of temporal encoding underlying predictive timing alongside context-dependent specialization in subcortical circuits.
