Protracted development of receptive field tuning in human auditory cortex

Audition is a fundamental sense, underlying critical human behaviors such as communication and recognition. Yet, how the tuning and organization of receptive fields in auditory cortex mature from childhood to adulthood is unclear. Through a gamified neuroimaging approach using functional MRI, we modeled population receptive field (pRF) tuning for frequency across auditory cortex in both children and adults. We observed a developmentally protracted increase in the representation of low frequencies in primary and secondary auditory cortex. This maturation of pRF tuning was correlated with developmental improvements in auditory processing. Our results offer evidence for an anatomically-predictable and behaviorally relevant functional organization of auditory cortex and lays important groundwork for understanding atypical auditory development.
