Computational Modeling of Stop Processes Captures Violations in Response Inhibition

Action inhibition is crucial for cognitive control. This type of response inhibition is commonly measured with the stop-signal task (SST), and the dominant framework for the SST is the Independent Race Model. Recent work has unveiled violations of independence assumption of the Independent Race Model, but no new model has been validated to supplant the Independent Race Model. To address this gap, we compared candidate models and found that all key aspects of stopping behavior could be fit by adding trial-by-trial variability in the potency of inhibition, which is lacking in existing models of response inhibition. This work establishes the response inhibition literature on new theoretical ground for understanding human behavior.
