Hyperthermia affects heterogeneity of neuronal network inducing abnormal synchronization

Temperature variations outside an appropriate physiological range can have debilitating effects on brain function. Although the temperature sensitivity of individual neurons is relatively well understood, it remains largely unclear how temperature affects neuronal impulse pattern at the collective level of networks. Here, we use a biophysical model to investigate how temperature influences neuronal synchronization and synaptic transmission. We find that elevated temperatures shift the overall neuronal output towards the range of chaotic and bursting behavior, which facilitates the network evolution from noncoherent to coherent states.
