The Drosophila brain is compact, yet it is able to perform computations that integrate information from various sensory and other neuronal circuits to produce complex behaviors. The advent of connectome data now makes it possible to investigate the relationship between neural connectivity on a full brain scale and synaptic localization at a biophysically-relevant scale. We performed community detection on the network of presynaptic inputs to a target neuron and found that the neurons within a community cluster their synapses onto the dendrites of the target neuron. These results suggest that community detection at the network level can reveal nanoscale structure that has biophysical relevance for individual neurons, which may have implications for understanding dendritic processing and for inferring neuronal and circuit computations from the connectome.
