Neural signatures of event prediction in novel videos

Prior knowledge about typical sequences of events can enable meaningful predictions even when in novel situations. Here, we compare neural activity and behavior underlying recalls based on episodic memory and predictions relying on prior knowledge, or event scripts. Participants viewed the first event of instructional videos, a subset of which they had watched earlier in the experiment, and then verbally recalled or predicted subsequent events. We found that participants could make reasonable predictions of events even on their first viewing, though these predictions were more semantically variable compared to recalls based on episodic memory. Preliminary fMRI results show that intersubject correlation while viewing the first event was higher in visual cortex for participants making predictions but higher in posterior cingulate cortex for participants recalling memories.
