Temporal dynamics and location tolerance of object category representation are unaffected by the presence of multiple objects

Recognizing objects across locations and amid other objects is a core visual challenge. When viewing single objects, high-order visual cortex extracts object category rapidly and with partial location tolerance (i.e. responding similarly to objects in different locations), but whether these properties hold for multiple objects is unknown. During electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, participants viewed objects of different categories at four peripheral locations, in two conditions: single objects in isolation or multiple objects in groups of four. We trained classifiers to decode category in each condition to characterize the temporal dynamics of category representation, and used cross-decoding across locations to quantify the location tolerance of category representation, since cross-decoding depends on similar representations across locations. Decoding accuracy peaked at the same time and was similarly reduced by cross-decoding for single and multiple objects, suggesting that the temporal dynamics and location tolerance of category representation do not change for multiple objects.
