Planning and remembering in partially observable settings

Decision making under partial observability requires both remembering what happened in the past and reasoning about what to do in the future. But remembering and reasoning are processes that tax people's limited cognitive resources. Previous work has shown that humans cope with complex planning environments by selectively attending to a subset of objects in the environment. In this work, we explore an analogous idea in the partially observable domain, where attention over the observation history manifests as selective encoding and forgetting of memories. We introduce a new partially observable task called KeyRooms, and find that people engage in a spectrum of strategies spanning the trade-off between memory costs and task performance.
