Recurrent Processing Diversely Reshapes Within- and Between-Category Geometry in Macaque IT

How does recurrent processing reshape object representations in macaque inferotemporal (IT) cortex after the initial feedforward sweep? Using the THINGS ventral stream spiking dataset (1,854 categories, 12 exemplars each), we investigate the evolution over time of two complementary representational metrics: exemplar distinctness (mean within-category pairwise representational distance) and category distinctness (representational distance from a category centroid to the nearest neighboring category centroid). We find that different categories exhibit a remarkably diverse range of representational dynamics. Some categories become distinct from other categories rapidly in the feedforward sweep, others only after recurrent computations. For certain categories, the exemplars become individuated earlier than for others and for some recurrent processing collapses within-category distinctness.
