Escape Response Reveals Computations Of Network Robustness

Understanding timing of information flow comprehensively has been limited by methodological constraints. We address this question by whole-brain imaging in C. elegans, which has 302 neurons that are all at most 3 synaptic hops away from each other. With the advent of Bessel illuminated calcium imaging combined with optogenetic stimulation in ASH during ongoing movement based dynamics, we demonstrate how the network achieves a robust escape response. Sequential and behavioral context dependent responses detected on a timescale of ∼15 milliseconds reveal how the signal spreads from ASH to motor neurons in the ventral nerve cord.
