Reaction time and EEG suggest different combination patterns for Simon and flanker conflict

Simon and flanker conflict are often studied separately, but it is less clear how they combine when both are present within the same trial. We tested this question in the public Nencki-Symfonia EEG dataset using the extended Multi-Source Interference Task (Dzianok et al., 2022; Wojciechowski et al., 2024). In a first-response RT analysis of 42 participants, the pattern was close to additive: a small interaction on the raw scale disappeared after log transformation. In the EEG analysis, 36 participants remained after epoch-count quality control, and the frontocentral negativity in the N2 range (200-350 ms) was smaller in the double conflict condition than predicted from the two single-conflict conditions. Thus, within the same dataset, RT was near-additive whereas the early ERP summary showed a nonadditive pattern.
