HyperBrain-Sparta: A functional template for the human brain

Different brains encode the same information in different topographic patterns of activity. To study the commonalities and differences of the information encoded in fine-grained patterns across individuals, it is necessary to resolve these topographic idiosyncrasies by hyperaligning all brains to the same functional template. Traditionally, a separate functional template is created for each study. As a result, data from different studies are hyperaligned to different templates, making it difficult to compare the results across studies or to perform meta-analysis. In this work, we present HyperBrain-Sparta, a functional template created using high-quality fMRI data of 300 individuals. We created the template to be representative of the group in terms of both connectivity geometry and functional topographies. We validated the template using an independent dataset to demonstrate that it enhances both shared and idiosyncratic information encoded in fine-grained spatial patterns.
