Spontaneous and Surprise-induced Changes in the Hippocampal Map

Hippocampal place cells encode location, collectively forming spatial maps. These maps then reorganize with changes in the environment. Here, we analyze the dynamics of place cells in area CA1 in stable environments, and following an unexpected switch in the location of rewards. In stable conditions, we observe spontaneous, coordinated remapping of a subset of cells. Following the reward switch, cell activity changes, with some cells becoming inactive, others newly recruited, and others shifting their place fields immediately after the switch. We introduce a Bayesian framework that captures population-level transitions between maps and quantifies trial-wise coordination across cells.
