Overgeneralization Emerges from Latent Cause Inference

Anxiety is associated with seemingly contradictory forms of altered generalization; individuals with anxiety disorder exhibit overgeneralization of fear responses to new stimuli and under-generalization of extinction learning to outside of the therapeutic context or time span. We employ a latent cause inference model with a time-informed Chinese Restaurant Process (CRP) prior to demonstrate that an increased preference for inferring more latent causes can provide a parsimonious account for both under-generalization from extinction learning and overgeneralization in stimulus space.
