An affordance perspective of dynamic pursuit and emergent change of mind in artificial agents

Biological agents possess a remarkable ability to adapt their decisions and actions on the fly. However, the computational and neural motifs that enable such flexible control remain elusive. Here, we used a prey-pursuit task to test whether affordance computation is necessary for flexible control generalization. Through systematic ablation of model modules, we found that affordance computation was essential for flexible control. Affordance-based agents exhibited emergent changes of mind similar to biological subjects, and dACC neurons encoded affordance-related variables, linking flexible control to a biologically plausible neural substrate.
